Veracruz, exciting city on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico was founded by the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés on April 22, 1519 as La Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz and ever since remained Mexico's most important seaport.

Today, the city is a modern trans-atlantic seaport with a great number of monuments from its past to show to the visitor its rich and colorful history.

Besieged by pirats for centuries, invaded by the US Army in 1846, attacked by the French in 1862, hit by hurricanes, floods and draughts over the centuries, the people of Veracruz retain their light-spirited way of live.

The Zocalo, the heart of the old city, where the Cathetral and the Townhall are located, is the center, where tourists and locals alike socialize every evening and night to the music of the region.

Well known for its traditions and its folklore, the City of Veracruz is also recognized for its exquisite gastronomy.
